Bret and Sterling

Dear Birthmother,

We are Bret and Sterling.  Our lives were forever changed five years ago by the selfless generosity of our son’s birthmother. We will always be grateful to her for her courage, clarity of mind, and compassion for life.  Once again, we find ourselves dreaming of a baby and all the joys and challenges that come with a newborn. We are ready for the sleepless nights, diaper changes, and midnight feedings.

We met fifteen years ago at a local Fisherman’s Festival and immediately felt as if we had been friends for years.  Within a month we knew we had found our soul mate.  For the past sixteen years, Bret has worked for an organic, vegetarian, frozen food company.  His job as Director of Manufacturing provides the financial security that will allow Sterling to be a stay at home mom when our new baby arrives.  Sterling has been an elementary school teacher for eleven years, teaching second and third grade.  She took a leave of absence when our son, Hayden, was born and has worked part time since.  In addition to her school’s award-winning reputation, Sterling chose to work there because it is just around the corner from our home and is the school our children will attend.

We live in an affluent suburb of a small city.  Our home is on a cul-de-sac where families play on the streets and kids bike through the park to school.  There are so many incredible outdoor activities just minutes from our house.  One of our favorite spots is a beautiful lake. It is perfect for our son to ride his bike, to walk our dog, or just to catch a glimpse of a river otter family. We are only a short drive to the ocean and a few hours from the mountains and ski resorts. Our home is the perfect place to raise a family with a large backyard complete with sandbox, trampoline, and a vegetable garden. It has become the gathering place for holidays, special occasions, and summer BBQs.  When the coastal fog rolls in we love to just curl up together in front of a fire and watch a good movie or play board games.  Our playful and loving young dog, Duncan follows us around and snuggles with Hayden while our two adorable cats, Soot and Ash, are often found lazing in the sun in the front yard.

Between the two of us, we have six brothers and sisters! We also have a close-knit group of friends, many of whom are from our own childhoods.  Our get-togethers are frequent and full of laughter.  Holidays and birthdays are always special.  Christmas with our family is a month-long event and always includes a visit from Santa.  Visiting Grandma is especially fun because she lives in a three-story house that overlooks the ocean.  The kids never tire of running circles on the enormous deck that goes all the way around the house or of taking walks through the giant redwood forest nearby.  Everyone is thrilled that we are going to adopt again!  In fact, our family and friends have already started gathering baby clothes, furniture and toys again for us.

During the warm months we can be found almost every weekend relaxing on our houseboat.  We enjoy friendly water balloon fights, building sandcastles, waterskiing, and tubing.  In the winter, we put away our bathing suits and break out our snow gear.  We can’t wait to share our passion for skiing with our children.   We fill the spring and fall months with family camping trips at the beach.  The dads dive for fresh abalone and the kids love to chase gulls and collect seashells. During crab season we all bundle up in warm clothes and throw our crab nets in the bay.  It’s hard to tell who has more fun – us or the kids!

As parents, we are both actively involved in the raising of our child.  We agree on the importance of being role models for our children by treating people with love and respect, working hard, and having as much fun as we can along the way. Our children will always know that they are safe, loved, and our first priority.
