Todd and Shawn

Dear Birthmother,

We feel so much compassion and love for the unbelievably difficult and brave choices you are making about adoption. We wish we could wrap our arms around you and tell you that your courage in making that decision takes a tremendous amount of integrity, and if you choose us as adoptive parents, we will forever provide your baby with a loving, nurturing and stable home. We want you to feel a sense of peace about your decision to place your baby for adoption.  We will honor your sacrifice by providing all the opportunities and love your baby could ever need.

We are Todd and Shawn. Todd and I met with a chance encounter on an Easter weekend in 1999 which sparked a friendship that quickly put us on the path to marriage. When we realized we had the same goals in life and values about family and faith, we fell in love, got married and within three years had a baby. We believe adoption is a path God purposely put us on.

We live on a military base in Alaska, where Todd is a pilot. We live in a child-friendly neighborhood where every house is full of children. At the end of our street is a playground where we play after school and across the street is a lake where our dogs Baron and Godiva like to swim. There are sidewalks on every street where we ride our bikes and our daughter rides her scooter. Although I am a clinical psychologist, I became a stay at home mom when our daughter was born. Some of the activities we like to do when we are home include visiting friends, arts and crafts, horseback riding, gymnastics, karate, walking our dogs, yoga, reading together or just hanging out with family and friends watching TV. When winter comes, we still play outside almost every day, go sledding, snowboarding, tubing and skiing. When the snow melts and the summer returns, we will fish, swim and boat on the many lakes and waterways throughout Alaska.

Although Air Force life brings the adventure of frequent moves, it also provides a close-knit and welcoming community that values family. Our baby will be welcomed into a family that consists of 2 great-grandmothers, 3 grandmothers, 2 grandfathers, 23 great-aunts and uncles, 27 aunts and uncles, and 20 cousins (ranging in age from 4 to 22) who we keep close in our hearts, minds and email! When we visit my family in the Midwest, we like to swim in Mimi and Pappy’s pool, ride on their boat down the river to sightsee and fish, watch our Uncle Matt coach his college basketball team and play tag with cousins in Indiana. We also take walks with my mom and her dog on a lovely tree-lined trail near her home. When we visit Todd’s family in the Southwest, we take trips to the family’s house in Mexico to walk on the beach and play in the ocean, we ride on trains and bumper cars in the park that Todd played in when he was a kid, we visit Todd’s grandmother and play with the turtles she has had for 3 decades, and we travel to the family’s cabin in the mountains of Arizona where the cousins pick fresh vegetables out of the garden and fruit from the trees.  As you can see, family is very important to us.

We recognize this is a heart wrenching time for you and thank you for taking us into consideration as adoptive parents. Your sacrifice takes so much courage and strength, and we will honor you by providing our child a loving, nurturing and supportive family in which to grow and flourish. We will never forget you.

With heartfelt love and appreciation,

Todd, Shawn and Hannah
