Domestic Adoption versus International Adoption
Making the Decision
What are the differences of an international adoption in comparison with a domestic adoption? Some differences include…
Cost:
-
The cost of a domestic adoption depends on service/agency fees, attorney fees, race of the child, and any Birth Mother support expenses. At Adoption Network Law Center, a qualified Consultant will be happy to quote the current Marketing Fee (if applicable) and Phase I Fee. Because of the variables involved with the Birth Mother who chooses you, your travel and Birth Mother expenses cannot be quoted precisely, but because of our extensive experience, we will provide you with a range.
-
Depending upon the country from which you adopt, International adoption can be very costly. Most agencies can help you estimate the total fees/cost before you begin your journey.
Travel:
- When adopting domestically, depending upon where your Birth Mother is living, there should be very little travel involved.
- International adoptions often require you and/or your spouse to travel to the country from which you're adopting for several weeks.
- With some international adoptions more than one trip is required.
Training/Classes:
-
International adoptions and some private adoptions do not require classes, but they may come in handy for parenting and other adoption information.
-
While ANLC does not require any classes, some states require them. Some adoption classes take as many as 25 or more hours to complete.
Ages of Children Available:
- Perhaps one of the biggest draws to domestic adoption is the fact that newborn infants are available. In fact, ANLC is proud to be a part of about 300 newborn domestic adoptions each year!
- With international adoption, due to the time it takes to complete paperwork and receive a "referral", newborn adoption are extremely rare.
