THE BLESSINGS OF INFERTILITY
Carol Gindi
On May 30, 1999, Allan Gindi graduated from law school with honors.
This was an incredibly emotional day for me. The pride I have for my husband
for taking on the challenge of law school in midlife was adequate enough, but
to finish in a record breaking two and a half years at the top of his class is
almost impossible to comprehend -- especially if you knew my wild husband. I
thank my secondary infertility for this amazing feat and all the benefits that
will go along with it.
I never thought or imagined that the plight of infertility and the immense
grief, sadness and inadequacy it made me feel would miraculously turn itself
into the greatest blessing of our lives. It led us to adopt three magnificent
children: David, Elan and Samantha Sharon. It led Allan to law school. After
the brutal beating we took from adoption attorneys, the scars remained and were
permanently imbedded in Allan's mind.
Before discovering Al Coen, we had no hope or belief that any adoption attorney
was worthwhile. Thank God for Al. The burning desire in Allan to make the
adoption world a safer and better place for adoptive parents paved his way to
law school. We have 800 nieces and nephews throughout the country and a handful
scattered throughout the world. We have infertility to thank for all these
incredible blessings and miracles.
I see and hear the dreadful pain in people still going through the emotional
distress with infertility. Perhaps they think I'm cavalier when I tell them to
move on, life gets better. My life couldn't be richer. Life is a process and
infertility is certainly a major hurdle in the process. We are the challenged
ones that have had an alternate route designed for us. People are born or
stricken with awful handicaps -- blindness, deafness, paralyzation, cancer or
mental disorders. I'll keep infertility over these other handicaps, any day.
I can see my gorgeous children, I can hear them say "Mommy, we love
you," and I can run the bases with them on the baseball field. How could I
possibly have thought of myself as handicapped? I was given a challenge and I
rose so far above it and won more gold medals than I can hold! Thank you God
for blessing me with infertility! It gave Allan and I a real purpose in our
lives -- to dedicate ourselves to helping others in their quest to fulfill
their dreams of parenting.
Can life get any better than this?
