Adoption Resources: Adoption Loans, Grants & Exemptions
- Adoption Tax Credit
Adoptive Parent(s) may claim over $10,000 as tax credit per child for qualifying adoption expenses.
- Tax Exemption on Adoption Services
Up to $5,000 in employer provided adoption benefits (up to $6,000 for special needs adoptions) per child may be excluded from your income.
- Dependent Exemption
Adoptive Parents may take the same dependency exemption on their income taxes for their adopted children.
- Adoption Employee Benefits Programs
Roughly a quarter of the nation's employers offer some form of adoption benefits to their employees. Federal and state employees are generally allowed up to $3,000 per adoption. Ask your employer about this benefit.
- Federal Medical and Family Leave Act
Unpaid leave under the federal Family and Medical Leave Act is also available to Adoptive Parents.
- Gift of Adoption Fund
The Gift of Adoption Fund turns the dream of adoption into reality for those who could not otherwise afford to adopt. Offers grants amounting to $2,000 or more to families adopting. Give a child a home for a lifetime. Call 1-877-905-2367 -
National Adoption Foundation
Families can apply for outright grants from this organization.
The grant program is open to all legal adoptions including public or private agency adoptions, international, special needs or independent adoptions facilitated by an attorney;
There is no income requirement for applicants;
Loan programs are open for any expense an adoptive family may have before, during or after their adoption is finalized. Grant amounts range from $500 to $2,500

HFLA interest-free loans are available to Jewish adults who wish to adopt children internationally or domestically
