The Flight/Plight of Adoption

Adoption brings us the ultimate joy and answer to our prayers. However, occasionally there are roadblocks and challenges along the way. The occasional roadblocks in adoption will allow us to face reality and know that challenges are just that. We must deal with the challenges appropriately and continue our journey until we reach our ultimate destination: parenting.

This month’s update is the first of a two part series addressing potential roadblocks that can make the adoption process somewhat stressful. The second part will be featured in next month’s update. It’s an actual account of one of our adoptive parents experience. They share the roller coaster of emotions they felt: from devastation and sadness to the ultimate joy of parenting.

Many adoptive couples fear that their birthmother will change her mind and want “your” baby back. The fear of having your child taken from your home is a real threat that all adoptive couples must face for a short period of time. Every adoptive couple must overcome this fear and the potential heartache and disappointment associated with it.

When a woman becomes pregnant, there is no commitment. She could have serious complications with her pregnancy and may give birth to a child with special needs. Unfortunately, life doesn’t come with commitments and neither does adoption. Adoptive parents enter into the adoption process with a clear understanding that there are risks and there are no commitments. At Adoption Network Law Center, we strive for the most painless adoption possible. Sometimes-adoptive couples may have to contend with a few pitfalls along the way: but ultimately their journey will have a happy ending and the adoptive couple will reach its final destination of parenting.

The unpredictability of the adoption process is like air travel. Each day, one and a half million planes take off and land safely from countless airports. Occasionally there may be a flight that is turbulent, delayed, cancelled, and re-routed to another airport, or possibly experiences a fatal crash. These risks are known when we board a flight. Aviation doesn’t come with commitments either. Does this threat stop people from hopping on a plane to reach their next destination? Of course not! Air travel is considered the safest, fastest and most direct means of transportation.

Similarly, thousands of adoptions are completed without tribulations. However, the possibility still exists that an adoption plan can fall apart. Adoptive couples must be realistic and prepare for this unfortunate possibility. Like aviation travel, adoption is the safest and most direct route to parenting available to infertile couples today. Until a fail-safe choice is available, just buckle your seat belt and be aware that emergency procedures may be necessary if our altitude begins to drop. Most importantly, remember we are all in God’s hands; and we can’t fight what He has planned for us.

We welcome you all aboard Flight Adoption. We are here to assist you with your journey -- with the ultimate destination being the joy of parenting. Being frightened and intimidated will not help us to our destination -- only determination and courage will. Meanwhile, sit back and enjoy your flight, and thank you for trusting us with your journey. Remember we are prepared with all the safety checks should they be needed.
